We are excited to announce Chenin Blanc Filly 2020 has stood out this year, winning awards at this year’s prestigious Winemag.co.za Prescient Top 20 Wines SA Report awards as well as the Platters Wine Guide 2021 awards!
Our Filly 2020 was fermented and matured for ten months in a unique combination of new, second-and third-fill barrels. This process ultimately produced a full but balanced Chenin endowed with unforgettably light intensity and saline finish.
Each year, Winemag.co.za reviews South Africa’s top wines across various categories in a series of reports sponsored by the multinational financial services company Prescient. This year, Winemag reviewed 990 wines across 20 categories. All the wines went through a blind tasting by a three-person panel of Winemag’s seven judges chaired by WineMag editor Christian Eedes.
The Cavalli Filly 2020 was awarded the following two awards:
Cavalli’s Filly 2020 outpaced nine highly rated contenders in the Chenin Blanc category with an astounding score of 96 points out of 100. This high score also enabled it to stand out as 2021’s best overall white wine, an achievement that brought everyone at Cavalli Estate much joy and pride.
Since Platter’s is primarily a wine guide, and not a wine competition two judging methods are incorporated when assessing the wines. The wines first go through the label sighted assessment, where the tasters learn as much as possible about the intent of the producer and the wine’s backstory, as well as vital details such as site and climate. Wines that scored 93 points and up in the sighted tasting round are re-tasted in a Five Star taste-off where a small panel of expert’s asses all wines blind to find the Five Star laureates.
At the Platters Wine Guide 2021 awards, our Filly 2020 was tasted by a panel of 14 tasters and have undergone multiple rounds of stringent tasting. It was announced that our exceptional Chenin Blanc Filly 2020 has received a 4.5-star rating!
